Connecting youth and community through writingWhat if young people around the Chicago metro area had a venue to speak about what is important to them? What if every student believed that they…as individuals…with the help of their community could truly be heard? Welcome to FreeShopper and Vital Times Publications. For the past 27 years we have been distributing our papers throughout the north and northwest sides of Chicago and the north and northwest suburbs. Our mission is to provide partnerships within the communities we serve by offering an affordable clearinghouse of goods and services and by providing a forum for various voices. Now we are giving the forum to our youth, and their voices through the written word. They need validation in an environment where they can display their thoughts among their peers, with guidance from their teachers, pride from their elders, and support by their community. That’s exactly what the FreeShopper and Vital Times is doing by offering a free-dome of speech in these vital times through a conversation with the community. Art Linkletter used to tell us: “kids say the darndest things.” This is a new, unique supplemental education program providing a framework, assessment from teachers, school involvement, parental involvement, and community involvement. We can make a difference. I look forward to working with you. We will publish up to ten works from your students on topics you choose beginning January 8, 2008. See publication dates. Submissions must be received by the Tuesday prior to publication date. Submissions must be no greater than 400 words, include a photo, and be sent as a word document. Additionally, we would like an introductory paragraph introducing your school and a brief overview about the writing. The stories will also appear on our web site www.freeshopper.com and there are plans for additional distribution being formulated. We have also received corporate sponsors to distribute the stories in their places of business and they include many local businesses as well as Taco Bell, Whole Foods, CVS, and Entenmann’s.
