I Ask the Impossible
by Karen Hernández
(Inspired by Ana Castillo’s poem “I Ask the Impossible”)
To Fernando:
I ask the impossible:
to try to stop using the drugz
that are affecting your brain cells,
even though you say they don’t.
I care a lot for you,
that’s why I would want you
to at least try to stop.
No person needs drugs to be happy,
unless they have an illness.
But if a person who don’t need them
uses drugs to supposedly relax,
it’s really not like that,
because to me, it’s if a person is not happy with life
that there is always a reason to do drugs.
I’m not asking for you to completely stop,
only to try – that’s all I’m asking.
If you try, or at least decrease the use of it,
that’s all I want, for me to know you care
about what I say to you.
