Soccer: More Than a Game

by Gustavo

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. Players can’t use their hands (except for the goalie) to score the ball on the other side of the field. There are 22 people on the field, 11 on each side. The object of the game is to score more goals than the other team.

This is what soccer is, but to me, it’s more. Soccer is a sport where only the strong survive and where legends are made. Players run up and down a 110 yard field with only the front part of their legs protected. Soccer is a sport where you fight to survive.

I started playing soccer at four years old. I’m pretty good at soccer, and I enjoy playing it. My favorite team is Las Chivas Ralladas from de Guadalajara. This is the best team in la Liga Mexicana. Chivas has created many good players, such as Oswaldo Sanchez and Carlos Salcido.

After all these years, I realize that soccer is one of the most important things in my life. Soccer is a sport where anything can happen on one field, in one day, and in 90 minutes!
Soccer is the world’s common language. It is a beautiful game that once you start watching it and playing it you’ll fall in love with the game. Soccer is the sport that unites the world. It is a sport that won’t ever be forgotten, not now, not ever.

“La Ola,” in other words the wave, was created in Mexico at the 1986 World Cup. In the Mexico vs. Germany game in el Estadio Azteca (Aztec Stadium), Mexico lost 2 – 1. The World Cup is played every four years to determine who is the best team. So far Brazil has the most wins with five, and my country, Mexico, is still looking for their first World Cup. I hope they win in 2010.

My favorite player is … well, I have a lot, but I’m going to go with Cristiano Ronaldo even though some people think it’s Bravo and Ochoa.

In soccer, everything counts. You have to give it your best when you’re on that field. There are heroes in soccer and there are legends. It is exciting to watch a game because everyone is waiting to shout and roar when their team scores a goal. The last game I went to was between Mexico and U.S.A.

Loyalty, strength, teamwork, fast feet, quickness: Soccer is made up of all these things and a lot more. People shout for joy when their team wins; some even cry for their team. Soccer isn’t just a sport; it isn’t just a game. It’s what brings the world together. Soccer runs through people’s veins and hearts. Soccer is a sport to love.
