The End of Time

by Larissa

Serina woke up sweating. She looked at her bedroom thermometer, 110o degrees, another typical day in New York. She wished it wasn’t always so hot.

She remembered the stories her grandfather told her about his grandfather and the olden times.

“Normal days in the year 2000 would’ve probably been 70°,” he would begin. “And they also had polar bears.

Wow! Serina had never seen a polar bear; the last one died three years before she was born. Now a days, they had holograms and replicas of extinct animals. A lot of things changed; now that it’s 2104.
The days kept getting hotter and hotter. People said there wasn’t any hope for earth anymore. Global warming had taken over, and humans had caused it.

Such a beautiful planet destroyed. Ruined. The iceberg in the artic that reflected the sun back out was now completely gone. Now it was only a matter of days. Serina felt a tear roll down her cheek.
A sudden blaring shook her concentration. It was the tornado alarm.

Now they used it to announce that the “big wave,” as they called it, was coming. They usually rang it two times a day, but this time it was different.

“Serina,” her mom yelled. “Gather your things! Quick!” What’s going on, Serina thought to herself. She quickly grabbed her emergency suitcase from under her bed and ran downstairs.

“What is it, Mama,” she asked. Her mom was pale and shaking.

“Mama,” Serina cried. “What?! What is it?!”
Serina’s mother ran outside. Serina followed. Not too far ahead, a wave greater than the statue of liberty was headed their way.

“Oh no,” Serina gasped. “It’s started.” Serina quickly got in the car with her mom. Serina’s mother kept trying to turn the car on, but it would not budge.

“Hurry, Mama, hurry!” The wave drew nearer and nearer. Each time it came closer, fear struck their hearts. Suddenly ……….
2007. Do we want to end up in this situation? Do we really want to wait to the last minute to try to stop global warming? Are we in such a denial that we don’t want to wake up and smell reality? Well news flash – it’s coming.

We cause so much damage to our beautiful planet and we don’t try to reduce it. You may think, Well, I’m just a kid, why should I care? Well, it’s your future at risk here. You want to live a long and healthy life, right? Let’s start trying to save our planet starting now.

If we all contribute a little, we can still save earth. Think about it.
