The Best Tube Flip Ever
by Ellen, 8th grade
The lake wasn’t choppy or restless. It was calm and warm like bath water. I pushed away from the kitchen table and ran to Rori, landing right next to her on the couch.
“Get up! Let’s go tubing!” I said out of breath.
“Do we really have to?”
“Duh! This is the first time no one is on the lake!”
“NO!” Rori said as I followed her into the kitchen. She turned to see me making puppy dog eyes. “Great, not the face.”
“You know you want to go,” I said.
“Actually, I don’t.”
“Chicken! Bak, bak!”
“I’m no chicken!”
“Then prove it,” I said with a great big smirk on my face.
“Fine, I will. When I knock you off that tube you will not be laughing,” Rori said as she stormed upstairs to change…
The boat made a purring sound as it started. We headed towards the middle of the lake, putting the tubes into the water and attaching them to the boat. We hopped on and gave Uncle Junior a thumbs up, telling him we were ready. Uncle Junior sped off, and it wasn’t fast at all. We weren’t even holding onto the handles. We kept giving a thumbs up to go faster.
“I’ll give you faster!” Uncle Junior muttered as he hit the gas, and we flew forward. Rori and I grasped onto the handles. We struggled to get up, and stay on. We started to go around a sharp turn. Rori tried to knock me off.
“Oh really!” I screamed. I pushed her over, and she hung off the side. Hitting a wave, she bounced back on. She tried to knock me off again, and this time, it worked! I flew into the air, and hit the water hard. My neck hurt like crazy as I swam back to the boat. Uncle Junior helped me up into the boat.
“Ha ha! I told you, you wouldn’t be laughing when I knock you off that tube!” Rori exclaimed boastfully. I gave her a dirty look.
When we got back to the summer house I went up the stairs from the shore and fell into the grass. I was in so much pain! I was lying on the couch for the rest of the day. Let’s just say I stayed off a tube for a long time, and Rori still gets the satification of bringing it up.
