Introduction

Principal: Julie McGlade
Assistant Principal: Heidy LaFleur
Literacy Coach: Lauren Bonga

Garvy School is a Chicago Public School located in the city’s northwest side. Students have been taught writing this year using the writing workshop model in kindergarten to eighth grade. They have been studying real authors and been taught strategies that real writers use when they develop their craft. Most importantly, they have learned that writers write with meaning and invest themselves more in their writing if they are taught to select their own topics and to write about subjects that are important to them. In the following personal narratives, students were asked to select a special person, place, or object that matters to them and then write the accompanying story behind an important small moment. Lauren Bonga, Garvy’s Literacy Coach, would like to thank principal Julie McGlade for her support. She would also like to recognize Lana Sternberg and Pat Whitson-Kane for their enthusiastic attitudes towards this philosophy on teaching writing.
