Why Giraffes Have Long Necks

by Oreoluwa, 3rd grade

Long ago before cars, people, snakes and horses, giraffes used to have short necks.  But, one day giraffe was walking to his friend monkey’s house to have lunch.  When he got to monkey’s house he could not reach the house in the tree because his neck was too short.  He felt sad because he could not reach monkey’s house.  So he asked bird and lizard, who were nearby, to stretch his neck.  Every year for 3 months straight, his friends would stretch his neck.

One morning giraffe woke up and went to the kitchen so he could measure his height against the height chart.  But, there was a problem.  His neck only grew an inch longer.  He was a little happier.  A year passed and giraffe was grown up.  He kept stretching and wishing for a longer neck.  Finally, his neck was long.  He could visit his friend monkey’s house.  He was so happy that he screamed, “hooray”!  So that’s why giraffes have long necks.
