My First Holy Communion (an excerpt)

by William, 5th grade

I can remember my fist Holy Communion Day like it was yesterday.  “WAKE UP!” shouted my mom.  I woke up bright and early because I was very excited.  First, I took a shower so that I would be very clean.  Next, I put on my suit and new Communion tie so that I would look very handsome.  Then I carefully combed my hair and brushed my teeth.  I was more than ready to go to church.
As soon as I got to the altar, I had to sing prayer songs like “Hail Mary” and “Our Father.”  When will we get to eat Communion? I thought.  I was very eager to receive my first Communion host.  We sang, prayed, brought up the offertory gifts and prayed with the priest.  Towards the end of the Mass, we finally got in line to receive Communion.
At last, I got to eat the Communion host.  It was a white, thin circular little piece of bread with a cross carved in it.  A man said, “The body of Christ.”  I said, “Amen.”  At last I got to eat it.  It was crunchy and as my cousin Kyle said, the host tasted like cardboard.  I never really ate cardboard, but I imagine it to taste like that.
After Mass, my family hosted a party at our house with over fifty cousins and relatives.  “Congratulations!” everyone said.  We had delicious food like pasta salad, Italian beef sandwiches and cake.  Yum!
