Thanksgivingby Will, 5th gradeOnce there was a family of five, three kids and two adults. One year at Thanksgiving they decided to have lots of friends and family over. Thanksgiving was an important holiday to them because they loved seeing family and friends and because they loved the variety of foods. In preparation for the big feast the mother and the kids went to the grocery store. At the store, the children knocked several display stands over. One of them was the soup cans. People tripped over the cans, breaking them. An employee ran up and got soup all over his body. The next display stand to fall was the apples, resulting in more slipping and chaos. Then they broke honey jars and syrup containers, spreading goo all over the floor. They got in so much trouble that they were never allowed at the grocery store again. The mother was angry with them, but they still got the food. One week later it was Thanksgiving Day. All of their closest relatives were coming to see them. While the grown ups were cooking, the kids were playing. “That’s my toy” the cousins were shrieking to each other. “Oww! Mommy, he hit me!” yelled another cousin. The children broke the toy that they were fighting over. After that the some of the parents supervised the children. Meanwhile in the kitchen the rest of the adults were doing more talking than they were cooking. The grandmother suggested that they eat the side dishes. “Let’s start with the potatoes” she suggested. When one of the cousins took a bite they said “this is disgusting”. “No they aren’t” her mother said. “Yuck, they are. Who cooked these?” her mother asked. “Oops sorry” said the grandmother. The adults really needed to focus on their cooking. “Well since the home-cooked food didn’t turn out so well we should go out for Mexican food” the grandfather decided. Everybody agreed. When they got to the restaurant they all agreed that Thanksgiving isn’t about food or things like that. It’s about being with the people you love and giving thanks. “We know Thanksgiving is about giving thanks, but this food is delicious” the cousins exclaimed. “This Thanksgiving wasn’t so bad” one of the uncles joked. “Oh yeah I’ll never forget this” the grandfather declared, and everybody agreed with him. THE END
