Introduction
Kim Barker - Niles West High School Sophomore English
Niles West High School, located in Skokie, Illinois, values teaching writing as a process. In English classes, students learn each step of the writing process, from brainstorming to publishing. Unfortunately, many times students do not have the chance to publish their writing in a formal sense, as often only their teachers and classmates read their writing. When presented with the opportunity to publish their writing in FreeShopper/Vital Times, these sophomore English students were excited to have their voices heard. Students chose a story from their teenage lives that would help others understand what it is like to be a teenager. Students worked on constructing a narrative with a strong opening, clear dialogue, and rich emotions. Students worked with teacher Kim Barker and the school’s Literacy Center to get advice on their narratives. They are excited to share their narratives with you.
